![]() ![]() It's great to have the confidence as a screenwriter and walk around as if you are one but until you have that first, second, or third great screenplay to show you're skill as a screenwriter, then becoming a professional screenwriter will be that much more difficult. You can call yourself a screenwriter, but people will truly believe it when they read your screenplay. Not just any screenplay but an exceptional one. One thing you'll learn soon enough as you embark on your screenwriting journey is that the screenplay is the best representation you'll ever have. ![]() The only difference there should be between you and a professional screenwriter is the amount of connections that you/they have and perhaps the size of your/their bank account. You should read books on screenwriting, take some screenwriting classes, work as hard as you can and be as dedicated as possible to the craft of screenwriting the moment that you begin to call yourself a screenwriter. ![]() You'll have to start living the life of a screenwriter if you truly want to call yourself a screenwriter. It would also be a great idea to start your own screenwriting group or perhaps join one. You'll have to write a lot and often, you should also try to read as many screenplays as you can. You have to keep in mind though, just calling yourself a screenwriter doesn't automatically make you a screenwriter.you have to actually write screenplays, which is why writing your first screenplay is the first step to becoming a professional screenwriter. If you treat screenwriting as a side hustle then it will take you longer to reach your goal and you might actually start to believe that you're truly not a screenwriter. Remember that screenwriting is not your side hustle, it's your real hustle and everything else that you do is the side hustle. But you should always start the conversation by telling them you're a screenwriter. Then if the conversation heads in the direction of how you make money for a living, then whatever your side hustle is, you can tell them. If they ask what screenplays you have written, you can let them know that you have several screenplays that have not yet been produced but will be in the near future and that you are working towards that goal. When friends and families ask, "what is your profession?", make sure you tell them that you're a screenwriter. You may not be a professional screenwriter, meaning you are not getting paid for your writing however, every professional starts out in their profession by first just doing it. You have to start believing and acting like you are a screenwriter before anyone else believes you are a screenwriter. Do not let anyone convince you otherwise. If you have written one screenplay, you are a screenwriter. If you're ready to give up when people tell you "no" because they think your writing sucks, then maybe being a professional screenwriter is just not for you. There are plenty of talented writers out there who never made it as a professional because they gave up as things got tough and couldn't handle the many bumps on the road. Talent is a major part of it, but certainly not enough on its own. Becoming a professional screenwriter begins with your ability to learn the craft and continues with your persistence. Just being a screenwriter is not enough you have to be good at it, and others must also see you're good at it. Being a writer is one thing being a talented writer is another. Whether you're 16 or 66, there will always be a story for you to tell, and people willing to read that story just make sure it's a well-written and engaging story with characters that jump off the pages. That's what's so great about being a writer of any sort you can write until you're 102 or for as long as you have a passion for it. When it comes to screenwriting, there is no timeframe where you feel that you have to "make it" by. You might decide to take a short or long pause in pursuing your screenwriting dreams that's perfectly fine, just make sure you don't take a permanent pause. As long as you don't actually quit, then the journey is just a bit prolonged. Do not be down on yourself if the thought of quitting ever comes to mind. That is to be expected for almost anyone who is pursuing a dream that's hard to achieve. If your goal is to become a screenwriter for your entire career, then you will have lots of bumps on the road, and at times you might consider quitting or putting things on hold. There are plenty of people who started out having big plans of pursuing their dream career, but things got tough and they came across a lot of bumps on the road and either decided to give up their dream or put the dream on hold. Those dreams can become a reality if you believe in yourself and work hard. We all dream of getting paid for something we love doing. Convince yourself that you're a great screenwriter and others will see it. ![]()
